Different Point of View

I am sure all of you get tired of me telling you how great OC is, and even though that is the sole purpose of this blog, I decided to incorporate a second point of view on OC in today’s blog (which is really making up for Friday).

image

My friend Jesika came all the way from Lubbock, TX to visit me this past weekend.  She is a freshman at South Plains College in Levelland, TX.  When I asked her what she thought about OC, she said, “I really liked the friendly environment.  Everyone was so nice.”  I couldn’t agree more.  The kindness of the students and faculty of OC is often overlooked when a student is considering attending here, due to the subtle mention of a FREE LAPTOP!  Who needs a friendly environment when you have a laptop?  Well, that scenario is definitely possible, but not plausible.  At OC, you get the best of both scenarios:  kindness complemented with technology!

OK, I kind of went off on a tangent, but what I was trying to convey is that OC is viewed as a friendly place by other students.  By the way, Jessie, I really enjoyed your visit!  Now you know the way if you ever want a nice, cozy, warm bed…...ON MY FLOOR!  Seriously, though, it was lots of fun!

Take care,
Jenna

Typical Monday

Today was a typical Monday:  woke up late, tried with all my might to stay awake in class, and took a four hour nap!  Gotta keep the immune system up to standards!

Kenneth Star was on campus today.  He spoke to my A.P.E. class about the law school he is now dean of at Pepperdine University.  His lectures (he spoke again in chapel) were very interesting, even to my politically ignorant mind.

Cold weather is moving in to Oklahoma, and you know what that means:  too many people hanging out in the lobbies!  Nobody wants to be outside in the cold, so they bring the party inside!  Fay was smack-dab in the center of the lobby braiding Artravia’s hair.  Now that she has long, beautiful locks, nobody’s gonna come near her coveted soy milk!  Hanging out in the lobby is always a good time…

My roommate Christina has a family tradition she would like to share with those die-hard fans of my blog:  WOMBAT WOMBAT.  Yes, these two words are said at the beginning of every month to ensure good luck.  Her sister, Audrianna made it up.  WOMBAT WOMBAT continues to astound everyone who is asked to join forces with Christina’s family in saying it.  So…WOMBAT WOMBAT, OC!!

Good Times in Chapel

Everyday students at OC are required to attend chapel, but each student is allowed 15 absences a semester.  Chapel is a time where the students come together to start their day off with God.  We sing, listen to speakers, and, on Mondays, we sing my favorite song:  the alma mater!  Today in chapel, Christina and I sat with Brenton Brown.  Chapel is supposed to be a time of spiritual focus, and I can do nothing but laugh when I sit with Brent.  He doesn’t mean to do it, he’s just a funny guy!  He does do a killer impersonation of Smeagol from Lord of the Rings, too - it’s hilarious!

In other news…BUSH WINS!  I’m probably not supposed to be biased on here, but I just can’t resist W!  Also, my A.P.E. teacher, Ken Miller, was elected!  I was hoping maybe class would be cancelled for the rest of the semester (or what we have left), but nothing will be affected until next semester.

I hope yall are enjoying the cold!  It’s snowing where I’m from (New Mexico)...how weird is that!?

Take care my preciousssses,
Jenna

TRADITION!

Yesterday was a very eventful day on campus.  So eventful, that I didn’t even have time to blog about it!

First, in my Fundamentals of Drawing class, a former student of OC visited our class.  His name is Danny Gordon, and he was a former art student here.  Now, he is an illustrator for children’s books, and he also does independent drawings.  Right now, he is visiting various elementary schools and showcasing his cat and dog drawings.  They are absolutely adorable!

Next, I actually found time to watch TV!  I never ever have time to sit down and watch TV, but yesterday was the season premier of the OC on Fox.  So, I definitely had to make an exception.  After I was done preoccupying my mind with the meager trials and tribulations of everyone’s favorite, mythical Californians, I ran over to watch “Fiddler on the Roof.”  I had seen this play when I was younger, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, so I had high expectations for the OC performance.  And, I can honestly say that it was very good!  I had a blast watching my fellow classmates to the Jewish-Russian-looking dance.  If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you should definitely go see it tonight!

Finally, I returned to my surprisingly clean room (thanks Christina!) and prepared to have the best sleep ever.  Advice to those of you not yet in college (mainly girls):  if you sleep with a stuffed animal at home, don’t be afraid to bring it with you to school!  It is comforting to have something from home always with you.  I actually didn’t notice how many girls had stuffed animals until last night.  So, I figured I would introduce you to Christina’s Pooh, my Grover, and Allson’s “Baby.”

Well, it’s Homecoming this weekend!  Lots of activities going on!  Yall have a great weekend!

Homework Has Consumed Me

image

The title says it all.  I have been holed up in my room studying and writing for the whole day…tomorrow probably won’t be much different.  I really wanted to go to the Bebo concert, but duty calls!  I’m pretty sure someone will have blogged about it by now, though.  Good night!

This Sport Is For The Birds

image

image
Tonight was my first experience with the well-renowned Eagle basketball games!  No, I didn’t go to homecoming, because my parents were in town just for the day, so I fiured I would hang out with them.  Anyway, boy are our guys good!  I don’t just say that because we won, either, but because the guys are just good players that see the floor well, hit the open man, and make at least two alley oops a game.  Some of the fans get pretty crazy, too.  I’m not exactly sure if it was a social club or an excuse for one (a.k.a. the freshman club), but a lot of guys were dressed in overalls and spelling out EAGLES.  It was too cute!  They were out on the court rolling amidst the 40+ OC Cheerleaders!  Yeah, we’re loud and we’re proud!  With that many cheerleaders we have to be…

Take care,
Jenna

Christmas in November

Long time no blog, huh?  Sorry, I haven’t felt up to or had time to keep you up to date on my intriguing life here at OC!

image
It is definitely getting colder here in Oklahoma.  When I have to turn on the heater and actually warm myself up, my mind automatically goes into holiday mode.  That means I sleep a lot, become unusually crafty, and, best of all, decorate!  I know, it’s only Thanksgiving, but when I am in holiday mode, it’s usually Christmas that engrosses my mind and creative ability.  So, it may not surprise you that I have a Christmas tree in my room and Christmas lights!  Also, one might hear Christmas songs (like the Chipmunk’s Christmas song) coming from my laptop as they enter my Christmas-themed room, but rest assured, they were obtained legally…

I hope everyone’s has had a good Monday and got the week started off right!  Don’t worry…my blogging is back and in full throttle!  OK, maybe not full throttle, but I’m definitely not gonna slack off this week.

Take care,
Jenna

P.S.  I was informed by a few people that these “men” in overalls were the 9 Noises.  Apparently they’re an OC tradition.  So, sorry if I offended anyone by my ignorance of the famed Noises.

Dollar Movies

Disappointment $0.00….Fatigue $0.00…Listening to Christina compare and contrast ‘The Notebook’ the movie, between ‘The Notebook’ the book, and stifling my laughter while Cody whispered jokes using his vocabulary word of the day PRICELESS!

image

OC is amazing when it comes to hooking the students up with activities to do during the week and on the weekends.  Tonight, the dollar movies at Northpark mall were free for OC students.  In fact, I think it may be every Tuesday night, but I’m not sure on that one.  So, Christina, Cody, Ricky and I decided we were going to see Napoleon Dynamite at 9:20…and so did the entire student body of OC.  OK, maybe not, but it was definitely too packed to find a seat.  Christina and I had this brilliant plan to be extra early and actually get to see the movie (we’re like the only people on campus who haven’t seen it), and become qualified to say ‘heck yes’ because we fancy quoting funny movie lines to the point of extreme annoyance.  If you know Christina and I at all, early doesn’t belong in any sentence involving punctuality and us.

Needless to say, we showed up a couple minutes late, to find ourselves stuck in the very back of the longest line the dollar movies has ever seen.  The theater showing Napoleon, as I have already said, was full (thus, the ‘Dissapoinment’ in the title).  We headed to ‘The Notebook’ (thus, the ‘Fatigue’ in the title).  Word on the street is, the book is better…

Anyway, it was fun listening to Christina scoff at the poorly portrayed plot in the movie.  Between her comments and my obnoxious laughter due to Cody’s jokes, we were probably the worst people to sit by in this Alzheimer’s focused, tear-jerking movie.  At least it was FREE!

Take care,
Jenna

Coffee & Homework

image

Tonight, I went to IHOP with Christina and Cody to do homework.  I like just getting away from campus, drinking coffee, trying to do homework, and hanging out with friends.  IHOP is awesome, too, because you can take your handy-dandy laptop and connect to the IHOP wireless Internet!  My computer graphics teacher assigned us a project to make our own website using raw HTML code…no HTML editors allowed!  It’s due Dec. 1st, and there’s no way I’m going to work on it over Thanksgiving break, so I figured I would get started.  Making a webpage is very detail-oriented work, but really addicting.  Once you start, it’s hard to find a stopping place.  So, some good ol’ IHOP coffee definitely improved my concentration.  Unlimited coffee for $1.50 - not a bad idea…

Have a good night,
Jenna

Critique is for the Brave

Ever draw something you think is really great and have someone else tell you it stinks?  Well, if you are, or want to be, an Art/Design student, like me, be prepared for brutal honesty.  Upon completion of some assignments, we are asked to pin our work to the wall, for the whole class (and every other class using that room) to see.  This class, by the way, is Fundamentals of Drawing, so the talent ranges from almost nonexistant to you-should-be-teaching-this-class talent.  If you fall under the almost nonexistant talent-type, then of course you don’t want your drawings pinned up for everyone to see!  On the other hand, why be an artist if you can’t handle critique?  Sometimes it’s tough not to take it personally, but come next class it’s usually forgotten.

image

This picture is of portraits we were assigned two classes ago. We partnered up and drew each other's faces. All of them are really good, and definitely improved since the beginning of the year! The portrait on the left that's darkly rendered, is by Jordan Dean. It's a portrait of Joshua Burgin, and it's awesome to say the least. Jordan practically puts (i'm not going to say everyone, but he's that good…) me to shame every class period. He has God-given talent for interpreting what he sees on paper. So, if you are an artist, such as Jordan, you have something to look forward to in drawing class…showing off your work!

Take care,

Goodbye, George!

image

Tonight was a sad night.  Mine and Christina’s favorite waiter at Denny’s, George, is moving back to Texas.  He really likes it here in Edmond, but he has to go back home over Thanksgiving break.  So, Christina and I ordered some coffee and a brownie sundae, hung out in Denny’s for a while, and bothered George while he attended his busy, busy tables.

image

Other than that, we didn’t do much.  OC has certain weekends set aside every month for Open House, which means that boys are allowed in the girls rooms and girls are allowed in the boys rooms…as long as both feet are on the floor!  Tonight, we went to Jordan’s room where he has a drumset set up!  Who would’ve thought that a drumset could fit in a dorm room?!  Well, they made it happen, and they’re obviously having a great time with it crammed in there.

The Answer Is…Christmas Decor

Time for decor in the dorms has rolled around again, and of course, I had a brilliant idea that did not turn out.  I wanted to make giant peppermints to cover the tables in the lobby.  So, I began working on them late at night, and I got a little fatigued, so the quality of my work went downhill…

image

I might lay them out anyways.

image

Tonight was supposed to be craft night in our lobby, but everyone was so homework-laden that we cancelled it.  And, when I say ‘cancelled it’ I mean we never worked up enough energy to get off our laptops and break out our hot glue guns!  So, Katie, Allison, Amanda, Christina, Trisha (for a little bit), and I just sat around in the lobby, discussed various genetic diseases and watched Celebrity Jeopardy, and did homework OF COURSE.

Nightie Night,
Jenna
