Oklahoma Christian’s Rhein Gibson was one of 64 players to qualify for match play at the British Amateur Championship, hosted by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.
Gibson, from Lismore, Australia, tied for 24th with a 6-over-par 148 in the two qualifying rounds in Turnberry, Scotland.
Gibson will play Florida State’s Jonas Blixt in the first round of match play. Blixt, who hails from Sweden, was one of 20 players (along with OC’s Bruno Buccolo) named to the 2008 All-Nicklaus Team, which honors the top college players in the United States.
The tournament features six rounds; the second and third round will be played Thursday, followed by Friday’s quarterfinals and semifinals, and Saturday’s championship. The tournament winner will automatically qualify for the British Open and the Masters on the PGA Tour.
