Counting down to conference play

KEITH HARRIS, Men’s Basketball

With the non-conference schedule coming to a close, things are really looking good for our team. Things I’ve noticed more as a senior is how we stick together and we want each other to improve every day. Right now, we are 5-2 and are preparing ourselves for another matchup with crosstown rival UCO. The last game was an awesome game, but it was definitely disappointing to our team because we lost by one point at the end. This game won’t be any easier because it’s on their turf and they will definitely have a good crowd. We will definitely have a good following too, so the stage is set.

Just two weeks of basketball left before Christmas break and I know some of us are looking for a bit of a break before conference starts; night in and night out, it will be tough. We are definitely up for the challenge to maybe stir up some stuff in our conference and hopefully be a top team. Things are looking on the upside. Just like any team, we will have some bumps because basketball is a game of nights as Coach Hays always says, but it’s also about peaking at the right time. We have always started really strong and have had perfect pre-conference records and then come up short in the end. Who knows? Maybe this time is different.

Thought of the day: “I do not have to build a perfect wall today. I just have to lay a perfect brick. Just lay one brick at a time,” Will Smith. Don’t ever think a task is too hard to grasp just lay one perfect brick, take it step by step and you can achieve anything.

Tough early season sked

KEITH HARRIS, Men’s Basketball

Well, two wins in the bag - one of which was a big game for us. Homecoming was an awesome experience and probably the best of my four years here at OC. The place was standing-room-only and it was louder then ever. What a way to have my last first game of my college career. To top it all off, we won the game and started our season on a good note. After Homecoming, it was right down to business. We had defending national champion Texas Wesleyan come to the Eagles’ Nest, not to mention the No. 6 team in the country, so the team and our fans knew how important it was to win the game. We started off a little slow, but began to pick it up with a huge spark from our bench. We competed from then on and ended up winning the game by nine.

However, resting now would not benefit us. After a game against Hillsdale Baptist, we have fifth-ranked Union and then “down-the-street” rival UCO back to back. These are three games that will definitely be good for our confidence and definitely good for our ranking. I’m really happy with our start so far. We just have to continue to get better and better each practice and each game and things will be good. On that note, I will end. Until next time, PEACE ... Thought of the Day: He has victory in store for you and is your shield and protector!!!

OU recap

KEITH HARRIS, Men’s Basketball

The hype of the OU vs. OC game has finally been put to rest. I think the team’s expectations weren’t met fully, but as a senior I’m pretty proud of our young guys for playing as solid as they did. We expected to play a little closer then the score showed, but first-half shooting woes hurt us early and we could never get back into the game. The experience was everything and the game was fun. I mean, how many small schools can say they played against the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University? I would say it’s pretty rare. I was definitely proud of our school’s support at OU. I kept looking to the crowd and I saw more faces that I recognized then people that I didn’t.

With that said, it’s time to move on to Saturday’s season opener. Homecoming is always my favorite time of the school year. Of course, we play our season opener, but the atmosphere is amazing and always fun to play in front of. The upcoming weeks will be very busy with basketball teams like Texas Wesleyan, Hillsdale Baptist, Union, and our up-the-street rival UCO. I am looking forward to a great year to come. For now, I’m out ...
