Corrupt politicians should be dealt with harshly. I’m not taking about the press-fueld, partisan, politically motivated criminalization of politics, a la Tom Delay and to some extent Bill Clinton. I’m talking about clear-cut corruption like that of this scumbag
man.
Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham pleaded guilty Monday to conspiracy and tax charges and tearfully resigned from office, admitting he took $2.4 million in bribes to steer defense contracts to conspirators.
This is the kind of corruption that destroys the rule of law and unravels civil society. The guy may get ten years. Given the harm that he’s caused and the enormous breech of of public trust he caused, I think the guy should probably spend the rest of his life in prison.
And perhaps have a hand chopped off for good measure.
