Valentine Cabaret Dinner Theater

The 22nd annual Valentine Cabaret Dinner Theater, presented by the Oklahoma Christian University Music Department and featuring the music of the legendary Broadway Composer, Leonard Bernstein, will be held on February 10, 11, and 12.

The festivities will start at 6:00 p.m. each evening, with a catered candlelight dinner in the McIntosh Conservatory, followed by the Cabaret performance at 7:00 in the adjacent Recital Hall.  This year’s Cabaret is titled “It’s Love:  Bernstein on Broadway,” and will feature twenty songs from the musicals West Side Story, On The Town, Candide, and Wonderful Town. The show will trace the ups and downs of relationships through such Bernstein favorites as   “Something’s Coming”, “Maria”, “New York, New York”, and “A Little Bit In Love”.

The Cabaret cast members are Laura Bowles, Hannah Faye Foster, Rachel O’Laughlin, Courtney Tarpley, Moriah Willing, Sam Durrill, Reece Kingcade, Cody Summerville, Brett Vanderzee, and Brian Wilcox. The show is directed and choreographed by Barbara Berard, with music direction by OC staff accompanist Eric Grigg, who will also play piano for the performances.

Heath Jones Attends Jazz Education Network National Convention

Dr. Heath Jones, Associate Professor of Music, attended the Jazz Education Network National Convention that was held in New Orleans, LA, on January 5-8, 2011.  Activities at the convention included performances, clinics, lectures, and late night Jams.  Dr. Jones is the vice president of the Oklahoma Chapter; he has taught music at Oklahoma Christian University since the fall of 2001.

Fletcher to Attend Band and Orchestra Clinic

Dr. John Fletcher, Professor of Music, will attend Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic to be held in Chicago, Illinois, on December 15-18, 2010.  Dr. Fletcher has been a member of the Oklahoma Christian University faculty since the fall of 1987.

Cocoa and Carols

Oklahoma Christian University’s 34th annual holiday gift to the community—“Cocoa and Carols”—will feature masterworks for chorus and orchestra, as well as much loved holiday music.  The yearly event will be Monday, December 6th at 7:30 PM in Hardeman Auditorium, located in the Garvey Center on the OC campus.

A wide variety of holiday selections will be performed by more than 200 students and faculty of the university’s music department.  Complimentary hot cocoa and cider will be served during intermission in the Conservatory, with seasonal music provided by the University Chamber Orchestra.

The program will begin with the traditional processional, “Personent Hodie,” followed by the performance of a program of choral/orchestral masterworks entitled “Three Great Glorias”.  These selections, composed by Bach, Beethoven, and Puccini will be presented by the University Chorale and full professional orchestra.  Conducting the works will be Dr. Ken Adams,
Professor of Music.

Following intermission and refreshments, the program will continue with a mix of favorite Christmas selections performed by the Oklahoma Christian University Chorale, Chamber Singers, Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Chamber Orchestra.  These selections will include yuletide favorites such as “Silent Night,” “Joy to the World,”  “Sleigh Ride,” “Jingle Bells” and “White Christmas.”

Dr. Thompson Attends NASM Conference

Dr. Kathy Thompson, Chair of the Music Department and Professor of Music, attended the National Association of Schools of Music Conference in Boston, MA, on November 19-22, 2010.  Dr. Thompson will represent OC as a voting member at the accreditation proceedings.  Dr. Thompson has taught as a full-time professor at Oklahoma Christian University since the fall of 1993.

Second Concert of the Oklahoma Community Orchestra

The Oklahoma Christian University Department of Music invites you to attend the second concert of the 2010-2011 Oklahoma Community Orchestra season on Tuesday, November 16, at 7:30 p.m. This concert will feature the orchestra performing music by Berlioz (Rakoczy March), Bizet (L’Arlesienne Suite No. 2), and Brahms (Symphony No. 3), and will be presented in Oklahoma Christian’s Hardeman Auditorium.  For further information about this concert, please call the OC Music Department at 425-5530.Admission is $10 at the door and $8 if purchased in advance online (www.okorchestra.org). Children under age 13 will be admitted free of charge. OC students, faculty, and staff are admitted free of charge with their OC ID.
