Hope Heinen scored OC’s goal in a 1-1 tie with Mid-America Christian.
OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 4, 2011) – Oklahoma Christian played arguably its best overall game of the soccer season Tuesday and the Lady Eagles came away with a 1-1 draw against Sooner Athletic Conference power Mid-America Christian.
Hope Heinen scored in the first half and goalkeeper Kaitlyn Whitten made eight saves as OC (3-6-1, 0-2-1) kept at bay a Mid-America Christian team that received votes in the most recent NAIA coaches’ poll and had won four straight games.
“It was certainly our most consistent game of the season,” OC head coach Randall Robison said.
The Lady Eagles lost to two other top conference teams, Oklahoma City and Southern Nazarene, by a combined 9-0 during their two previous games, but they hung with MACU (7-1-1, 2-0-1) from the start. Robison used only 13 players even though the game went into overtime.
Chelsea Swisher scored off a feed from Julia Nimal in the 22nd minute to give the Evangels the lead, but Heinen equalized less than five minutes later, with Taylor Cofer assisting.
After that, neither team could break through. The Lady Eagles’ defensive back line limited MACU’s offensive chances and when the Evangels did get a shot, Whitten was there to stop it. The Evangels matched their lowest-scoring game of the season.
MACU goalkeeper Melissa Dobie had four saves.
MACU outshot OC 13-12. Angela Pete had four of OC’s shots while Heinen had three and Rachel Bates took two.
The Lady Eagles will visit USAO on Friday and Rogers State next Tuesday before playing five of their final six games at home.
