OC routs Southwestern Christian in women’s soccer season opener

BETHANY, Okla. (Sept. 2, 2011) – Five Oklahoma Christian players scored Friday as the Lady Eagles rolled past Southwestern Christian 5-1 in OC’s season opener.

The win, OC’s third straight in a season opener, snapped the team’s eight-match winless streak. After posting a 2-13-2 record last season, head coach Randall Robison said it was important for the Lady Eagles to win “and to remember what it’s like to play well.”

“The first half, I thought they looked great,” he said. “They reminded me of the team two years ago that was nationally ranked. The second half they still looked good.”

OC (1-0) outshot Southwestern Christian (0-3) by a 20-3 count. Hope Heinen put the Lady Eagles ahead with a goal scored from 25 yards out. Angela Pete followed with a goal off a free kick. Before halftime, Amanda Schatzel (off an assist from Pete) and Taylor Cofer also had scored for OC.

Katelyn Frederick added an insurance goal in the second half for the Lady Eagles, with Heinen assisting.

With her teammates controlling the action in front of her, OC goalkeeper Chelsie Flagg had to make only two saves.

“I’m happy that all five goals were good quality goals,” Robison said. “We didn’t rely on one person’s individual effort to light a team up.”

The Lady Eagles’ first home game will be Tuesday, when they host NCAA Division II Southwestern Oklahoma State.
