(Feb. 23, 2010) – The Oklahoma Christian men’s tennis team enjoyed a weekend of success going 4-1 in team victories this past weekend with wins over NCAA division II schools.
On Thursday, the Eagles took on Harding University (Ark.) and won the first four singles matches before dropping the last two. Chase Miller narrowly lost the tiebreaker 12-10 after a 1-1 set tie. Thomas Van Cauter, Etienne Leite, Renardy Guelfi, and Esteban Flores each won their singles matches 2-0.
In doubles, OC’s Martin Poboril teamed with Leite to win 8-6, Van Cauter and Guelfi won their doubles match 8-2, and Flores and Miller earned an 8-4 victory to give the Eagles a team total of 7 to Harding’s 2.
Later that day, the same squad, with the exception of Poboril taking Van Cauter’s position in singles, swept Hendrix College in a 9-0 decision with a 6-0, 6-0 singles victory by Guelfi and 8-0 doubles matches by Van Cauter and Guelfi and Flores and Miller.
On Friday, despite several close matches that came down to the tiebreaker, the Eagles still pulled out an overwhelming 8-1 win against Delta State University (Miss.). In singles competition, both Poboril and Guelfi pulled out wins during tiebreaker games.
During doubles, Poboril and Leite held on to take a 9-8 victory over the DSU squad, before the two remaining teams won 8-5 and 8-4.
The Eagles earned their only loss on of the weekend on Saturday when they played Ouachita Baptist University (Ark.) dropping the team match 6-3. Thomas Van Cauter earned the only singles win for the Eagles with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Jan Plewiaski.
In doubles, Poboril and Leite pulled out a 9-7 victory while Van Cauter and Guelfi won with a match of 8-4 to give the Eagles two more victories for a team score of 3 to OBU’s 6.
The Eagles finished out the weekend taking on Southwest Baptist University (Mo.) and winning in a close match 5-4. For singles, Poboril, Guelfi, Flores, and Miller all earned two set victories giving the Eagles four wins heading into doubles.
Poboril and Leite sealed the win for the Eagles with an 8-3 doubles victory that gave the squad the five set to four win.
The Eagles are now 9-1 overall and will play next at Edmond’s Oak Tree Country Club for the Eagle Tennis Indoor Classic on Friday and Saturday.
