Lady Eagles upset No. 2 seed in first round

JACKSON, Tenn. (March 17, 2010) – The Oklahoma Christian women’s basketball team upset the No. 2 seeded Point Loma Nazarene University on Wednesday night in the first round matchup 66-63.

The Lady Eagles fell to a 15-point deficit in the first half but were able to rally together to take the win in the second half with help from Lindsay McCown who scored 21 points.

After a decently matched first several minutes, the Lady Eagles trailed Point Loma 8-12 with 11:22 left to play in the first half. PLNU utilized the next six minutes to go on a 17-6 run against the OC women in order to create a 15-point lead with just under five minutes to play before the half.

The Lady Eagles responded, however, and used the last five minutes of the half to come within five points of PLNU with a last second basket by McCown to make the score 32-27.

The Lady Eagles came out of the locker room ready to play in the second half as the OC women closed the PLNU lead to just one point in less than three minutes.

The Lady Eagles continued to trail for nearly 10 more minutes before bringing the score to a tie at 46-46 with 8:33 showing on the clock. Unable to take the lead, the OC women held within a basket of PLNU before regaining the lead at 54-52 when Brittney Kennedy sunk both of her free throws.

PLNU tied the game up again at 54-54 with 3:01 left to play and took the lead back with a two-point basket with just 2:22 showing.

With just under a minute and a half left to play, the Lady Eagles took the lead with a basket by Kennedy. Now at 58-57, McCown made a three point play on a layup drawing the foul to increase the Lady Eagles’ lead to four at 61-57.

The final minute of the game came down to free throws as PLNU tried in desperation to regain the lead. The Lady Eagles shot 5-1 from the line in the last minute to hold the lead as PLNU sank three baskets during that time to leave OC with the 66-63 final decision.

McCown also grabbed seven boards in addition to her 21 points to lead the Lady Eagles to their first round win.

Lisa Chenoweth sank three treys on her way to a 12-point game while Kailan DeCamp also scored in double digits tallying 10 points. Additionally, DeCamp made four assists and two steals.

The now 20-12 Lady Eagles will play Westminster College (Utah) in the second round at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
