Logan McKee hit a critical 3-pointer in the second half for OC in its 87-84 win over LSU-Shreveport.
WAXAHACHIE, Texas (Nov. 11, 2011) – Katy O’Steen scored 15 points and Carli Covalt added 11 as Oklahoma Christian held off a late rally by LSU-Shreveport to win 87-84 on Friday in the Southwestern Assemblies of God Classic.
OC (2-0) hit 6 of 17 3-point attempts and led by as many as 10 points in the first half before settling for a 45-44 halftime lead over the Pilots (0-2). A 7-0 run to start the second half gave the Lady Eagles a 52-44 edge and Skyler Newberry’s basket made it 62-52 with 14:40 left.
LSU-Shreveport rallied within 64-63 with 8:43 left on a pair of free throws by Jenna Diakos, but the Pilots were never able to take the lead.
OC responded to each second-half challenge, with Roz Hamilton, Jessica Findley and Logan McKee all hitting crucial 3-point baskets to keep the Lady Eagles ahead. McKee’s 3-pointer came with 3:04 left and gave OC an 80-71 lead. Findley’s trey with 45 seconds left gave the Lady Eagles their biggest lead at 86-75.
The Pilots had one more rally in them and pulled within 86-84 after a basket by Sharde Henry with :03 left, but Covalt made 1-of-2 free throws for OC with :01 left to seal the win.
“We didn’t shoot well and turned it over too much but we were able to pull it out,” OC head coach Stephanie Findley said. “The other team tried to shut Katy Clift down but everyone else stepped up.”
Fourteen players saw action for OC and for the second time in as many games, all of them scored.
The Lady Eagles shot 41.4 percent from the field (29 of 70) and committed 23 turnovers, but LSU-Shreveport wasn’t much better, shooting 45 percent (36 of 80) and also committing 23 turnovers.
Diakos had 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Pilots.
OC will play the event’s host, Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas), on Saturday afternoon.
