Lady Eagles beat Houston-Victoria 2-0, snap 3-game losing skid

Laura Welch, shown here earlier this season, scored a late goal in OC’s 2-0 win over Houston-Victoria.

OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 23, 2011) – Rachel Bates scored in the first minute and Laura Welch tallied a late insurance goal to lift Oklahoma Christian to a 2-0 win over Houston-Victoria (Texas) on Friday.

OC (3-4) snapped a three-game losing streak with the win, which came in the Lady Eagles’ final nonconference game of the season. OC opens Sooner Athletic Conference play Tuesday at Oklahoma City University.

The Lady Eagles outshot Houston-Victoria 15-8 and freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Whitten, making her first career start, posted a shutout by making five saves.

“This was a much improved performance from the last few games,” OC head coach Randall Robison said. “Our players did a better job of sticking to our game plan. Our backline stayed organized throughout the game and our forward players were creative.

“We’ve felt like we were a much better team that we have showed recently. Tonight was a good recovery.”

OC caught the Jaguars (5-6) off guard in the opening moments. Angela Pete, from the right corner, passed the ball across the goalmouth to Bates, who tapped the ball past Houston-Victoria goalkeeper Tabitha Segovia 59 seconds into the game.

That lead stood for most of the game. With less than three minutes left, Welch found herself in a one-on-one situation with Segovia and beat the goalkeeper, making it 2-0.

Amanda Schatzel took six of OC’s shots, while Shannon Denesi took all of the Jaguars’ shots.
