Jared Consoli fired a 2-over-par 73 for OC in the first round of the Harold Funston Invitational.
HUNTSVILLE, Texas (Oct. 10, 2011) – Logan Herbst fired an even-par 71, but Oklahoma Christian’s men’s golf team mostly struggled on a soggy course Monday and stood sixth after the first round of the Harold Funston Invitational.
OC posted a team score of 293, 10 shots behind the tournament leader – and the Eagles’ Sooner Athletic Conference rival – Oklahoma City University. The tournament, originally scheduled for 54 holes, was cut to 36 holes after heavy rains delayed Monday’s start, meaning OC has only 18 holes left to move up in the standings.
“I am a little disappointed by our men’s play today,” OC Director of Golf David Lynn said. “We just were not sharp. We had trouble getting any momentum as we started very poorly.”
Herbst had a steady round on the 6,943-yard layout at Raven Nest Golf Club, with one birdie and one bogey. He’s tied for seventh in the individual race, six shots behind the leader, Kristian Einarsson of Nicholls State.
OC’s Jared Consoli and Alasdair Dalgliesh both were 4-over-par at one point but rallied to close at 2-over 73, tied for 16th. Vilhelm Bogstrand – the medalist in last week’s Texoma Championship – fired a 76 and Kyle Hudelson shot a 77 for the Eagles.
The good news for the Eagles is that they didn’t shoot themselves out of the tournament, which is being hosted by Sam Houston State.
“I was proud of the way we grinded today. Hopefully we will learn from our mistakes,” Lynn said.
The tournament’s final round will begin Tuesday at 8 a.m.
