Andee Wayne scored 11 points for the Lady Eagles in their 75-62 loss to Wayland Baptist (Texas).
OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 2, 2012) – Roz Hamilton scored 19 points and posted her second career high in as many games since returning from a hand injury, but Oklahoma Christian fell behind early and never caught up in losing 75-62 to Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Thursday night at the Eagles’ Nest.
OC (7-15, 2-13 Sooner Athletic Conference) lost its ninth straight game. The Lady Eagles didn’t record a field goal until Andee Wayne’s basket with 10:45 left in the first half, and Wayland Baptist (8-12, 6-8) had built a double-digit lead by that point.
The Flying Queens led by as many as 18 points in the first half before settling for a 39-24 halftime lead. OC started the second half on an 8-1 run and pulled within eight points on two occasions, the latter at 42-34 on Hamilton’s two free throws with 15:22 left.
Wayland Baptist responded with a 16-6 run – which included 3-pointers by Alex Williams and Jessen Tucker – and went up 58-40 on a basket by Williams with 11:03 left.
The Lady Eagles rallied within nine with 2:17 left, at 69-60, on the second of two consecutive 3-pointers by Katy Clift, but the Flying Queens went 6-of-6 from the free-throw line in the final 1:08 to clinch the win.
Hamilton, who scored 15 points on Saturday against Mid-America Christian in her return after missing nine games, went 10-of-12 from the free-throw line. Katy O’Steen added 17 points, going 11-of-13 from the line, and Wayne scored 11 on 5-of-6 shooting. The Lady Eagles shot 52.2 percent (12 of 23) in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to recover from 21.7-percent shooting (5 of 23) in the first half and 31 turnovers for the game.
“I liked our effort in the second half,” OC coach Stephanie Findley said. “Hopefully we can carry that over.”
Clift’s two 3-pointers increased her career total to 201. She’s six treys shy of tying Ali Griffin for second place on OC’s career list.
Tucker went 3-of-4 from 3-point range and led Wayland Baptist off the bench with 17 points. Williams added 15 and Erika Raymond scored 13 for the Flying Queens, who shot 49.1 percent (26 of 53) from the field.
OC will host No. 9-ranked Lubbock Christian (Texas), the SAC leader, on Saturday at 1 p.m.
