Neil Hilton, shown celebrating after a goal earlier this season, scored OC’s first goal in the Eagles’ 3-1 win over Southwestern (Kan.).
WINFIELD, Kan. (Sept. 5, 2011) – Matt McLain scored the tiebreaking goal and Duc Hyunh added an insurance score to lift Oklahoma Christian past Southwestern (Kan.) 3-1 on Monday night.
The Eagles (2-0-1) never trailed against Southwestern (1-1) and continued their turnaround from last season, during which they opened with nine straight losses. OC outshot the Moundbuilders 22-13 and mostly kept control of the match.
Just as he did in a season-opening win over Sterling (Kan.), Neil Hilton put OC ahead in the first half, scoring at the 39:05 mark by knocking in the rebound of his own shot that hit the post. That gave the Eagles a 1-0 halftime lead.
The Eagles milked that lead until the 72:29 mark, when Karlo Sanchez equalized for Southwestern. But just as the Moundbuilders seized the momentum, OC grabbed it right back. Less than two minutes after Sanchez’s score, Hilton took a free kick, which Sam Guernsey headed across the goal and McLain knocked in.
In the 83rd minute, Duc Hyunh sealed the win for the Eagles, scoring off a rebound after a shot by Domenico DeGrazia had been saved. DeGrazia was credited with the assist.
Goalkeeper Tim Spencer had four saves for OC.
The Eagles will host Texas College on Friday. A game scheduled for Saturday against Ecclesia (Ark.) has been designated as a scrimmage, since Ecclesia doesn’t yet have a varsity soccer team.
This video features scenes from Chuck White’s final home game as OC’s head baseball coach. Coach White was the driving force in the revival of the baseball program and the construction of Dobson Field and the Bobby Murcer Indoor Training Facility.
