ABILENE, Texas (Feb. 7, 2010) – The Oklahoma Christian men’s tennis team won all three of their competitions at the Abilene Christian Winter Invitational while the women came away with a 1-1 record for the weekend.
On Friday, Thomas VanCauter got things started for the Eagles in singles competition winning over Abilene Christian’s Eldad Campbell in a 6-3, 7-6 decision. OC’s Martin Poboril followed suit to defeat ACU’s Luke Hawk 6-2, 6-3.
OC’s Renardy Guelfi and Esteban Flores both won their singles games as well. Guelfi defeated ACU’s Bryan Joiner 6-2, 6-3 while Flores beat Jared Hope 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles competition, OC’s Poboril teamed with Leite to pull out a victory against ACU’s Hawk and Strahl 9-8 before the Eagle squad lost the next two doubles matches.
The OC men added up five wins, however, to take away a 5-4 victory over ACU.
On Saturday, the Eagle squad took on both Trinity University (Texas) and Midwestern State (Texas) and came away with wins in both to remain undefeated.
In competition against Trinity, VanCauter, Poboril, Leite, Guelfi, and Flores all earned 2-0 victories in singles.
For the first doubles match, Poboril and Leite beat out TU’s Cocanougher and Kowal 8-5 to grab the only doubles win for the Eagles. The win left the Eagles with six wins overall to take down TU 6-3.
That evening against Midwestern State University, the OC men won all but two matches to earn their third team victory in a row.
For the first three matches of singles competion, VanCauter, Poboril, and Leite each won the first two sets to claim victories for the Eagles. Flores followed the lead in match five winning 6-1, 6-0 over MSU’s Joyce.
On the doubles side, Poboril team with Leite, VanCauter teamed with Guelfi, and Flores teamed with Miller to win all three matches.
The men’s tennis team now holds a 3-0 record to start the season.
On Saturday in the women’s competition, the Lady Eagles overcame Midwestern State 6-3.
In singles play, Midwestern and OC split the difference with each team winning three matches apiece. Olfa Dhaoui, Maja Vuzem, and Vimbai Mawisire each took home victories for the Lady Eagles.
Dhaoui and Mawisire each won their matches two sets to none while Vuzem lost her first set before coming back to win the next two 7-6, 10-4.
The Lady Eagles dominated in doubles play winning all three matches. Vuzem teamed with Maja Plavsic to win 8-5 and Dhaoui paired with teammate Andreea Contantinescue to win 8-6. Mawisire and Leila Keihani then coupled to win the third match 8-4.
The OC women’s success in doubles left them with a 6-3 team victory over MSU.
The Lady Eagles didn’t fair as well on Sunday against Abilene Christian University. The women’s squad was unable to gain a victory against the Wildcats and fell to a 9-0 team loss.
The OC tennis teams return to Edmond to host the Oak Tree Intercollegiate Indoor Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
