Eagles take down West Florida

PENSACOLA, Florida (March 17, 2010) – The Oklahoma Christian men’s tennis team earned a 5-4 win over the University of West Florida on Wednesday while the Lady Eagles took a hard 8-1 fall.

The OC men’s squad pulled out a victory over the NCAA division II West Florida winning four singles matches and one doubles match to seal the win.

OC’s Thomas Van Cauter took the first singles win with a 7-5, 6-2 victory before Martin Poboril won the second after a first set loss. Poboril defeated UWF’s Leandro Ferreira 6-7, 6-2, 6-2.

Renardy Guelfi of OC defeated Sean Gunnels 6-1, 6-2 and Esteban Flores pulled out a victory after a first set loss. Flores finished on top with a 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 decision.

Etienne Leite and Maxim Salitra both suffered singles losses for the Eagles.

In doubles, OC’s team of Poboril and Leite took the only victory winning 8-5.

The 5-4 win over UWF leaves the No. 8 Eagles with a record of 11-1.

The Lady Eagles struggled against the women of UWF on Wednesday as they only won one singles match.

OC’s Maja Plavsic gave the Lady Eagles their lone victory in a 6-3, 6-2 win over UWF’s Mariana Sonnervig.

The defeat leaves the OC women with a 6-2 season record.

The men’s and women’s tennis squads will take on William Carey (Miss.) at 9 a.m. on Thursday in Pensacola, Fla.
