Eagles rally for wild 4-3 win over Houston-Victoria

Joe Broam, shown here earlier this season, scored a momentum-changing goal in a 4-3 win over Houston-Victoria.

OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 23, 2011) – Neil Hilton converted a penalty kick in the 75th minute, capping a rally from a two-goal deficit and giving Oklahoma Christian a 4-3 win over Houston-Victoria (Texas) on Friday night.

Trey Boykin came off the bench to record a goal and an assist for OC (4-1-2) in the Eagles’ final nonconference game of the season. OC will open Sooner Athletic Conference play Tuesday night at Oklahoma City University.

Houston-Victoria (9-2) had an eight-game winning streak snapped. The closely contested, physical match saw seven yellow cards issued – four to the Jaguars and three to Oklahoma Christian. OC posted a narrow 15-14 edge in shots.

Matt McLain headed in a free kick by Hilton to put the Eagles up 1-0 in the 23rd minute, but Ranique Ramsarupe – who was on his rear end in front of the goal – managed to equalize for the Houston-Victoria during a scramble in the 30th minute.

The second half featured a six-minute span during which four goals were scored.

Adrian Mendoza scored in the 51st minute for the Jaguars and less than three minutes later, Stiven Ospina beat OC goalkeeper Tim Spencer to put the Jaguars up 3-1.

OC head coach David Scott immediately inserted three substitutes – forward Trey Boykin, defender Greg Scholes and midfielder Joe Broam, who gave the Eagles a burst of energy.

Boykin assisted on a goal by Broam that came 23 seconds after Ospina’s score. In the 57th minute, Boykin took a long pass from Cion Samuel and beat Houston-Victoria goalkeeper Nathan Kenyon on a 20-yard shot to tie the game.

In the 75th minute, a Houston-Victoria defender took down Scholes in the penalty area, giving the Eagles a penalty kick, which Hilton converted.

Spencer had two saves, while Kenyon had five for Houston-Victoria.
