Eagles, Lady Eagles advance to quarterfinals

MOBILE, Ala. (May 18, 2011) – The Oklahoma Christian men’s and women’s tennis squads both played to 5-0 shutout victories in their second-round matches on Wednesday to advance them to the quarterfinals on Thursday.

The No. 4 Eagles downed Concordia University (Calif.) with three doubles victories to start the day off, followed by two singles wins to seal the match victory.

Thomas Van Cauter and Pier Pieracianni pulled out the first doubles win going 8-5 before teammates Martin Poboril and Bruno Tiberti played to an 8-0 shutout victory. Renardy Guelfi and Esteban Flores finished out doubles play for the Eagles pulling away a close 9-7 win.

Poboril and Guelfi were the only Eagles to finish their singles rounds. Poboril defeated Concordia’s Kareem Berdai 6-1, 6-3, before Guelfi’s 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ryan Mcnamara ended the match early giving the 5-0 team victory to the Eagles.

For the women, the No. 5 ranked Lady Eagles followed suit taking a 5-0 shutout victory over William Carrey University (Miss.).

The OC women saw little resistance in doubles play as Hermon Brhane and Lucie Sipkova started things off with an 8-2 victory. OC’s Maryfer Abreu Roman and Marta Contel-Miranzo narrowly missed a shutout win going 8-1 before Andreea Constantinescu and Makenzie Miller closed out doubles play winning 8-4.

Contel-Miranzo and Miller were the first to finish singles play giving the Lady Eagles the 5-0 team win. Contel-Miranzo claimed a complete shutout 6-0, 6-0 victory while Miller was close to the same with a dominating 6-2, 6-0 win.

The team victories send the OC tennis teams into the quarterfinals on Thursday. The Eagles will take on No. 5 Azusa Pacific University (Calif.) at 9 a.m. while the Lady Eagles will play against No. 4 Azusa Pacific University (Calif.) at 1 p.m.
