Boykin’s hat trick leads Eagles past Sterling in season opener

OKLAHOMA CITY (Aug. 27, 2011) – Trey Boykin had a hat trick and Rogers Otienno had a goal and two assists, leading Oklahoma Christian to a 7-0 win Saturday over Sterling (Kan.) in the season opener for both teams.

Everyone on OC’s roster got into the game as the Eagles (1-0) scored early and often against Sterling (0-1), outshooting the Warriors 26-6. The blowout win was a marked difference from last season, when OC often struggled to score and began the season on a nine-game losing streak.

“It’s a good start,” OC head coach David Scott said. “Last year we wouldn’t have done as well against a team like Sterling as we did today.”

Goalkeeper Tim Spencer had three saves, including one in the opening minutes that kept OC from falling into an early hole. Soon after, a foul on the Warriors in the penalty box resulted in a penalty kick just five minutes into the game, which OC’s Neil Hilton converted for a 1-0 lead.

Newcomer Dominico DeGrazia fed Sam Guernsey for OC’s second goal, in the 16th minute.

Then Boykin took over, scoring a half-hour into the match off a feed from Hilton and again 10 minutes later, taking an assist from Otienno and making it 4-0.

Angel Nisi scored less than five minutes into the second half, on a pass from Tommy Guernsey, to put OC ahead 5-0. Otienno scored on a rebound shot at the 72-minute mark and Boykil completed his hat trick about a minute later, with Otienno assisting.

It was the sixth multiple-goal game of his career for Boykin, who now has 21 career goals.

Sterling goalkeeper Jordan Cabrera made 10 saves and only one of the Warriors’ players, Tyler Lowden, had more than one shot. Lowden had two.
