OC junior Brayden Barrientez is the Sooner Athletic Conference’s men’s track athlete of the week.
OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 30, 2012) – Oklahoma Christian middle-distance runner Brayden Barrientez has been named as the Sooner Athletic Conference’s men’s indoor track athlete of the week, the conference announced Monday.
Barrientez, a junior from Wichita, Kan., won the 1,000 meters and was a part of the winning 4x880-yard relay team at the Oklahoma Christian Indoor Invitational, held Saturday at the University of Oklahoma’s Mosier Indoor Facility in Norman.
Barrientez covered the 1,000 meters in 2:33.31 to come out on top in the field of 18 runners. He beat the second-place runner by almost six seconds. His time, the 14th-fastest so far this season among NAIA runners, conditionally qualified him for the NAIA Indoor Championships in the event.
Also on Saturday, Barrientez ran a 1:58 second leg on OC’s 4x880 relay team, which won in 8:01.65, beating the runner-up squad from Oklahoma Baptist by more than four seconds.
Earlier this season, he qualified for the NAIA meet in the mile, and his 4:15.31 time in that event ranks fourth-best in the NAIA.
